SRAC and Tanglewood Nature Center team up to bring a FREE educational series this summer!

The second of the 3-part  series is “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” - This live animal program presented by Tanglewood Nature Center highlights LIVE BIRDS!

Learn about the distinctive features of each type of bird while you get a varied look at some of Tanglewood's bird ambassadors and enjoy SRAC’s Exhibit Hall  filled with thousands of local Native American artifacts!

New Sterling Silver Jewelry Line in SRAC's Gift Shop

Ellen Sisco has been giving beading classes and selling her fine gemstone jewelry at SRAC for year, and when I asked her to consider bulking up her inventory at SRAC, she eyes brightened and a huge smile came acrossed her face.  Little did I know that Ellen had a huge inventory of sterling silver jewelry from doing vendor shows a few years back that she had in storage and was really looking for something to do with them.

How much jewelry are we talking about? Ellen had enough jewelry to fill a whole booth at the shows she went to. We have worked for four hours for 4 days tagging these items so far, and we still have a tone to go! AND - Ellen left the prices from when they were going to the vendor shows - giving us all incredible prices! (In fact Susan and I bought just for ourselves three bracelets, three rings and a necklace!)

And just like when you buy Fuddy Duddy's Fudge in our gift shop, SRAC makes a commission on every sale! So come on in and shop to your hearts content without guilt - because you are supporting your local nonprofit while doing it!

I want to personally thank Ellen for supporting SRAC over the years and for adding this incredible new line to our gift shop!

We need your help.

I know what it is like to grow up in a small town. People get stuck in their own daily grind and they have grown used to shopping at Walmart in order to get their things and a nice trip the mall suffices for everything else. Things happen in your community that you miss totally, not because you are uncaring, but because you are just busy and have a routine...

So today I am asking you to consider breaking your routine and to take an afternoon this summer and to walk your downtown and to see what is there and what is going on. I am asking you to walk in the shops and to say hello to the shop keepers and to ask them about things that are coming up. I am asking you to take a weekend and to commit to stopping at your local museums and to take in what they have to share about your community heritage and to thank them for volunteering so that your community can share their commonality amongst their differences in their local history.

If you have been reading the updates from SRAC, that is what many of them are about, and we need your help in spreading this word and breaking the routine of your own busy lives by getting back in touch with your community.

We need you. 

Think your small town has nothing to offer? Instead of shopping online - shop your small town stores because most of the dollars spent go back in to your community and start helping it grow.

Instead of opening letters in the mail and sending donations out to huge organizations with huge budgets and salaries for their staff, go to your local museums and nonprofits and ask them what they do for your community and where their donations are spent, and begin to make a change that invests in your own community and your own quality of life.

Break the negative small town cycle. Without community support - small shops close for lack of local support, and sadly so do museums and non profits.

Make this change and you will see it make an impact right where you live; spread the word and make your small town succeed.

"Remembering Lincoln at Gettysburg " - Tuesday July 2nd at SRAC

 

"Remembering Lincoln at Gettysburg " will be presented by by Lance Heidig, from CornellUniversity on Tuesday, July 2nd 6:30 – 7:30pm at SRAC, 345 Broad Street , Waverly, NY.

Waverly native and Cornell Outreach and Learning Services Librarian, Lance Heidig, has spent the past year researching Abraham Lincoln. Focusing on materials from the Cornell University Library’s extensive Lincoln collections, he will discuss and commemorate the 150th anniversaries of the Battle of Gettysburg, and the Gettysburg Address.

A $6 donation admission fee is requested for all non SRAC members, $4 for SRAC members, and students attend all events free. Admission to the SRAC Exhibit hall is included in the admission fee.

Jewelry and Beading Class -Saturday, June 8th

Have you ever wished that you could find that one necklace or bracelet that would go with that special sweater or outfit that you like to wear? Have you ever wanted a special necklace that could show off a family heirloom or pendant? Have you ever just wanted to find a necklace made of that special gemstone or color scheme that you like so much? Many jewelers are adding custom jewelry making to their services to fill this need, but SRAC is offering the opportunity for people to create their own beaded jewelry at a fraction of the cost and with high quality gemstones!

On the Second Saturday of each month, Ellen Sisco holds classes at SRAC in basic and intermediate beading. Supplies include beads and all accessories to complete a necklace or bracelet. Hundreds of precious stones, clips, glass beads and polished glass chips are among the variety of items that the attendees will be able to choose from.

You can also call SRAC and request specific colors and/or gemstones that you want to make your jewelry with! Ellen will facilitate your needs and help you make the perfect piece of jewelry for yourself or for a gift for someone else. Fees for this two hour beading class is $25. New Mexico's 'Atari Dump,' to be Excavated

Apparently, if you're a gamer, not very old at all!
